Does God Exists or Not?
The idea about the existence of God is one of the major debating topics since the beginning of the world. Throughout centuries people have expressed different perspectives in connection with this subject. No wonder some of the encyclopedias have biggest essays on God. This is still a debatable subject because we may not be able to produce tangible evidences as we can do in other issues. However, people deal with this subject even on today because of their inner quest to find a meaning in life. Usually there are three kinds of people based on their answers for this crucial question. The first two groups either agree or disagree on the existence of God and third group take stance that they don’t know about it. In this essay I will explain what are things we need to consider in dealing with a subject like this and the reasons to believe that a God exists and some of the implications if we don’t believe in God.
To consider the existence of God as true or false, first of all we need to look at the four interrelated characteristics of truth. If anything needs to be claimed as true one should understand that truth should be objective, truth should be absolute, truth should be exclusive and truth should be non-contradictory. We won’t be able to state that both are correct at the same time. For example, a circle cannot be square and circle at the same time. It’s either the circle or the square at the same time but not both. Now we can consider the common statement that atheists make “There is no God”. In making this statement he is actually saying that there is no absolute reality. Nevertheless, to make a statement that there is no absolute reality he should have absolute knowledge. Suppose if he has absolute knowledge to make such a statement then he himself is becoming the absolute being because it is only an absolute being has the absolute knowledge and that is what exactly he is denying that there is no absolute being. Any statement denying the existence of God is not true because it is a self contradictory statement.
There is no moral world without considering the existence of God. If we say there is too much evil in this world and therefore there is no God, we are actually saying that there is good and evil in this world. To differentiate something as good and evil we need to have some references otherwise everybody will come up with their own versions of good and evil to justify their own actions. That is why some people justify adultery as fun and pornography as art. We cannot differentiate between good and evil based on feeling as everybody feels differently. We distinguish between good and evil based on the moral laws exists in the world. We need to consider that if there is moral law, then there must be a moral law giver. It’s only God give us consistent basis for moral standards (Zacharias, Ravi in Can Man Live without God). When we have no such a choice we may end up in considering evil as good and good as evil. All atheists are actually not immoral, but what they are actually doing is applying the moral standards of God in their life and then denying the existence of God which is like eating fruits and denying the existence of its tree.
Most of the statements against the existence of God itself are self contradictory and self destructive. As we have seen in the philosophical argument, this is same in the case of scientific arguments also. It states that only that can be proven or verified scientifically is true. However, the problem with this statement is that we cannot verify scientifically whether this claim is true or not. Actually scientism is giving only philosophical arguments not scientific statement about its own claim (Sudhakar Mondithoka in God Science and Scientists). Furthermore, science cannot deal with issues like moral issues, social issues, historical issues, existential issues. It cannot answer the questions like origin, meaning also. Scientific theories are not in consistent with the explanation of the origin of life. Science can neither prove nor disapprove of the existence of God ( Zacharias, Ravi in Can Man Live without God).
Atheism which claims to be in consistence with science cannot explain why something was there at the time of beginning of the universe because if something was there at the beginning for the “collision” then that is not the actual beginning. Therefore, atheism holds view that this universe is infinite but this theory is not in consistence with laws of science (Zacharias, Ravi in The End of Reason).Consider Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity which favors a view that the universe is a finite one. His theory explains that our Universe is expanding which means there was point of reference in the past which means the universe is finite. This is exactly opposite the atheistic view that the universe is without beginning. How can we expect to explain the reason and meaning of life from a philosophy which cannot find a reason for its own beginning?
If we deny the existence of God we won’t be able to explain real values of our feelings like LOVE. Consider when we express our love to our dearest ones; scientifically we have to explain that we do it because of some glandular secretions and chemical reactions. Even so, is that what the real value of that character of love? Is that what a wife or fiancĂ©e should understand when we express our love to her? When we take our dearest baby to cuddle scientifically this baby is just a collection of atoms. Is that what the actual meaning and value of a baby? How scientifically we can place ourselves above animals without considering moral values. A cat may have a sexual relation with its own mother as it is scientifically and biologically creates no problem but when a human being does this activity we call it as an incest relation. Scientifically and biologically there is nothing wrong even if human beings do this, but we find something wrong morally. There is no morality without considering the existence of God. If we deny the existence of God, we have to believe that we are in this world by accidentally and it has no purpose and reason, but this belief gives no hope for life. (Lane, Craig William in God Are You There). This can lead a person to suicidal thoughts especially in times of loneliness. Many of the atheistic countries like Russia and Lithuania have the highest suicide rates in the world.
We should appreciate all the good things science provided to shape our life but to make a sense of many things we certainly need God. The intelligent design in the universe proves the existence of God. When we analyze the human body or anything like that we will be amazed at the intelligent design. Consider the designing and the fine tuning of the universe. We come to know about its reality only when some of these setting have been dismantled. “The fine tuning has established itself as an aspect of the universe that merits very serious consideration” ( Lennox, John C in Gods Undertaker Has Science Buried God). The possibility of an intelligent design without an intelligent designer is absurd.
It’s the belief in God gives only meaning and hope for a person’s life. There is actually more than enough evidence which proves the existence of God than evidences which disapproves of the existence of God. However, many of us don’t take a stance on believing in God is because either we are mentally lazy, or we don’t like it but certainly not because science or any other theories proved otherwise. Whatever may be the reason the end result is the possibility of meaninglessness and ultimately self destruction of life.
